The weather on Sunday, September 24th, may not have been particularly inviting, but the atmosphere here at Rothe House & Garden was both warm and welcoming.
A unique event took place to commemorate Kilkenny man, Thomas White, who took part in the famous Boston Tea Party, 250 years ago this year.
A delegation from the Boston Tea Party Ships & Museum, together with Revolution 250, arrived in Kilkenny to remember Thomas and his contributions on that historic day.
We were delighted to organise and host the event, with the invaluable assistance of Donal Croghan and others involved in the Kilkenny Great War Memorial Committee, and the day was deemed a huge success by all.
Music was provided by piper, Tony Coy, refreshments were catered for by La Rivista, and speeches were delivered by Kilkenny’s Cathaoirleach Michael Doyle, Mayor Joe Malone, Revolution 250’s Jonathan Lane, Creative Director of the Boston Tea Party Ships & Museum Evan O’Brien, Deputy Chair of Rothe House Trust and President of Kilkenny Archaeological Society, Fonsie Mealy, and Josiah George delivered a first-person account of Thomas White himself. The entire event was MC’d by Ger Cody.
A commemorative marker was presented by the Boston contingent to Cathaoirleach Michael Doyle, who then presented it to Rothe House Trust to be planted along with a white rose bush in our beautiful walled garden.
