‘Hedgerow & Wayside’ art exhibition at Rothe House

As part of this year’s Alternative Kilkenny Arts Festival (AKA: The Fringe Festival), Rothe House is delighted to host the ‘Hedgerow & Wayside’ exhibition.

This is a unique exhibition of work made from handmade papers dyed with plants foraged from the hedgerows and waysides of County Kilkenny.

It comprises of a series of 2D and 3D forms, worked on using willow charcoal and egg tempera; materials that further represent the plants used to dye the papers, creating a complete, circular relationship between plant & paper.

Jen Castle and Polly Minett are environmental artists based in County Kilkenny.

Jen Castle is an eco-artist, whose work focuses on native plant species, linked to the re-wilding and regeneration of the land around her studio and home in Thomastown.

Polly Minett is a papermaker working with plant fibres and recycled cotton rag and botanical dyes.

Together they combine artistic practices and research with foraging from the hedgerows and waysides around their studios in County Kilkenny to create a fascinating body of work.

Guest Collaborator: Kate Powell is a musician and composer, who will compose a soundscape to complement the exhibition, incorporating field recordings gathered from Kilkenny hedgerows.

Venue: Rothe House & Garden

Dates: August 7th to 17th 2025.
