Seachtain na Gaeilge 2025 at Rothe House

Seachtain na Gaeilge 2025: Irish returns to historic Rothe House

We will also have a fantastic evening of traditional music with some of Kilkenny’s most accomplished musicians!

This Seachtain na Gaeilge, the Irish language is set to make a return to the historic former home of the Gaelic League in Kilkenny.

For the first time, Rothe House & Garden is offering its full guided tour as Gaeilge on Saturday, March 8th, and again on Saturday, March 15th at 10.30am.

Once owned by founder member of the local branch of the Gaelic League (now Conradh na Gaeilge), Timothy O’Hanrahan, Rothe House was the first base that the Conradh had in the city and county in 1898.

For more than a hundred years, the Conradh made use of the historic buildings, which date from the late 16th century, as their base to teach Irish classes, as well as traditional music and dancing.

Rothe House is therefore proud to bring the language back to this 400-year-old setting for Seachtain na Gaeilge 2025.

Those joining will learn all about the rise and fall of the Rothe family here, Cromwell’s invasion, and what different inhabitants of these buildings experienced from the 16th to the 19th centuries.

Spaces on the two tours will be limited, but you can call ahead to book a place or come along on the morning.
