Blooms burst as summer starts!

June marks the beginning of summer and is one of the most exciting months in the garden.

With long, sunny days and warmer temperatures, the plants are thriving and blooms are bursting open.

Fruits are ripening and vegetables are filling out.

However, our old nemeses, the weeds and pests, are also growing and thriving!

Weeding often – in fact, almost every day – helps to keep the garden from becoming a big problem.

And when it comes to pest control, checking plants regularly is advised. You can encourage natural predators or organic pest controls where needed.

Aside from those tasks, keeping plants hydrated is really the key to successful blooms and harvest! Water early in the morning or late in the evening to avoid the water evaporating from the plants too quickly in hot weather.

Another important job (weekly or even daily) is to deadhead your plants to really encourage repeat blooming.

This month you should also sow the seeds that you want to harvest in late summer, such as salad leaves, beetroot, and carrots.

I would also advise giving your plants and vegetables a boost with liquid fertiliser every seven days. Liquid fertiliser is absorbed by the plants quickly, but is leached from the soil quickly too. Therefore, it requires regular application.

Finally, don’t forget that climbing plants, such as sweet pea, beans, and peas all require regular staking and tying to support them as they grow.
