Kilkenny Archaeological Society was established in 1945 with the aim to promote and renew interest in the antiquities and history of Kilkenny city and county.

The Kilkenny Archaeological Society has a full programme of events each year, including lectures, field trips, and seminars, as well as an annual overseas trip to a region of historical interest. The library of the society is housed in Rothe House and is open to the public a number of times a week. The library contains a wide collection of Kilkenny newspapers from the 18th to 21st centuries, maps and family archives as well as numerous books relating to local history.
